Rotonde de la Villette

Construite par l'architecte Ledoux. Elle appartenait au mur des fermiers généraux. Elle servait au paiement de l'octroi, une contribution supprimée en 1791. Toute personne entrant dans Paris (ou tout autre lieu soumis à cet impôt) avec des marchandises devait s'en acquitter afin de pour importer ses marchandise dans cette ville. Le mur des fermiers généraux (limite de l'octroi à Paris) fut démoli à partir de 1791 mais la Rotonde fut épargnée. Pour connaître mieux son histoire vous pouvez cliquer ici!

Built by an architect called Ledoux, this rotunda belonged to the Wall of the Farmers General. This wall was a kind of 'tax border' around Paris. People willing to enter Paris with goods, had to pass this wall paying a toll called 'octroi' to be allowed to import to Paris these goods. This wall had been destroyed since 1791 when octroi was abolished but this rotunda remained from destruction and has been since 1907 protected being a "National Monument".

Art dans la rue

That is Art on the street! For a long time the plinth of a former statue had stood here alone. Maybe the former statue was taken by the Germans to be melt and turned into weapons, who knows. Until a few month ago when this big Apple was but on it!
For the record, some years ago, a friend of mine and I complained that empty plinth and pedestals were to be found everywhere and we should use them again for modern art. Obviously we were not the only ones to think like this...
